The EarthQuaker Devices Scrolls Bass Odyssey is a versatile effects pedal for bassists who want detailed control over their sound. Developed in collaboration with Japanese bass sound specialist Kentaro Nakao of Number Girl, it processes the natural input signal of any bass to recreate the sonic character of a wide range of bass and amplifier combinations—from warm vintage sounds inspired by classic Motown recordings to powerful modern metal tones.

The Scrolls Bass Odyssey delivers an analog, punchy and articulate sound with a dynamic response and pleasing tube-like warmth. Its core drive channel is modeled after classic tube amplifiers, while the high-quality EQ channel features active, audiophile-grade tone controls. Dedicated Blend and Bandwidth controls allow precise adjustment of the distortion intensity and frequency distribution.

Drive and EQ

  • Drive Level: controls the drive channel’s output volume.
  • Drive Blend: mixes the unprocessed signal with the signal from the drive channel.
  • Drive Bandwidth: determines where clipping is most pronounced.
  • Drive Tone: low-pass filter.
  • EQ Level: controls the output volume.
  • EQ Vari: boosts or cuts the selected frequency.
  • EQ Vari-Freq: frequency control from 20 Hz to 10 kHz.
  • EQ tone controls: Treble, Bass and Middle.

Quick controls and connections

Three push-button switches provide quick adjustments in live and studio settings. Deep boosts 80 Hz for rich, clear bass. Process attenuates the lower mids for a modern, assertive sound, while Bright boosts 5 kHz to add attack and presence.

An integrated effects loop is positioned between the Drive and EQ sections and features a 6.35 mm input and output. The pedal also has an always-on, active buffered parallel output that sends the unprocessed signal to external devices such as an amplifier, DI box or tuner.

The balanced XLR direct output includes analog speaker simulation, making the pedal suitable for so-called “ampless” setups with a direct connection to a mixing console or audio interface. The main input and output use 6.35 mm jacks.
