The Ibanez RG Standard RG470DX-SFM electric guitar in Seafoam Green combines a fast Wizard III neck with 24 jumbo frets, a meranti body and Quantum pickups.

The Wizard III profile is slightly thicker, rounder and softer than the Wizard and Super Wizard profiles. It provides a little more wood in the hand without feeling thick, stiff or bulky. The neck has a 400 mm radius instead of the 430 mm radius used on Wizard necks, offering a fast and easy-playing feel.

Construction and hardware

  • Wizard III maple neck
  • Meranti (mahogany) body
  • Jatoba fingerboard with white dot inlays
  • 24 jumbo frets
  • Ibanez Edge-Zero II tremolo bridge
  • Black hardware

Meranti is a relatively light wood with an even frequency response across the register. This makes it versatile for shaping the sound in different directions, while the even response also works well with distorted tones by keeping the sound cohesive without becoming diffuse or unclear. The Edge-Zero II bridge provides stable tuning.

Pickups and controls

The guitar features a Quantum humbucker at the neck, a Quantum single-coil in the middle position and a Quantum humbucker at the bridge. The pickups are connected to a 5-way selector switch with master volume and master tone controls.

  1. Bridge pickup in series
  2. Bridge pickup split together with the split middle pickup
  3. Middle pickup
  4. Neck pickup split together with the middle pickup
  5. Neck pickup in series

In series mode, both coils are connected in series. This gives the pickup the output and power it was designed for, while also providing hum-cancelling, quiet operation. In split mode, one coil is switched off, so the pickup operates as a single-coil with approximately half the output and power of series mode. It no longer cancels hum on its own.

Modes 2 and 4 are nevertheless hum-cancelling and quiet because the active coil in the bridge or neck pickup is connected in parallel with the middle pickup. These settings produce a softer, brighter and more open sound with cleaner, clearer and tighter bass, making them well suited to clean and semi-distorted tones. Since only one coil is active, you can choose whether the active coil faces the bridge or the neck, which affects the sound: warmer toward the neck and brighter toward the bridge. This requires physically turning the pickup around in the guitar.
